Beat the Streak is back for the 2022 season — and the $5.6 million prize is still up for grabs.
The idea is simple — pick one player (or two) every day who you think will get a hit. The objective — surpass Joe DiMaggio’s record-long 56-game hitting streak — is a bit more challenging.
Let’s take a closer at the action from yesterday and today:
Longest active streak: 35 (collinbjohnson)
Longest season streak: 45 (kiyoshilotus26)
Longest streak all-time: 51
Most popular picks (yesterday)
1. Tim Anderson, White Sox (15.7%)*
2. Trea Turner, Dodgers (11.3%)*
3. Freddie Freeman, Dodgers (9%)*
4. José Abreu, White Sox (7%)
5. Raimel Tapia, Blue Jays (3.9%)
* – Recorded a hit
Most popular picks (this season)
1. Trea Turner, Dodgers (9.4%)
2. Freddie Freeman, Dodgers (6.6%)
3. J.D. Martinez, Red Sox (5.3%)
4. Manny Machado, Padres (4.8%)
5. Paul Goldschmidt, Cardinals (3.2%)
Trea Turner, Dodgers (vs. Nationals)
Turner has recorded back-to-back two-hit game against his old team, his eighth and ninth multihit games of July, bringing his batting average for the month to .322. He’s batting .311 with a .957 OPS against lefties like Patrick Corbin, who’s allowed a Major League-high 142 hits and 70 earned runs this season.
José Abreu, White Sox (at Rockies)
We had Abreu on this list yesterday, and why not stick with him? He comes into Wednesday’s finale batting .353 with a .979 OPS over his previous 63 games. He’s still hitting at Coors Field against a pitcher in Antonio Senzatela, who’s not a strikeout threat (38 K’s in 65 innings) and is allowing 13.8 hits per nine innings.
Mark Canha, Mets (vs. Yankees)
Domingo Germán got knocked around by the Astros in his first start of 2022 last week, allowing five runs on six hits, including two homers, in just three innings. You could pick Pete Alonso here, the Mets’ best hitter, but Canha is also 6-for-9 with a homer and a double vs. Germán in his career.
Twins (at Brewers — Corbin Burnes)
The Twins have some good hitters, but Burnes has a 2.20 ERA and is leading the National League with 149 strikeouts this season while allowing a batting average of just .186.
Tigers (vs. Padres — Yu Darvish)
Darvish has been going deep into games, pitching seven or more innings in seven of his nine starts since the beginning of June. He has a 2.87 ERA in those starts, with 65 strikeouts in 62 2/3 innings.
