The Twins announced on Tuesday that that they have placed shortstop Carlos Correa (right middle finger contusion – retroactive to May 6) and right-handed pitcher Chris Paddack on the 10-day Injured List (right elbow inflammation – retroactive to May 9).
Correa, who suffered the injury on May 5 at Baltimore after fouling a ball off his hand in the seventh inning, was hitting .412 (14-for-34) with three doubles, one home run, eight RBI and a 1.033 OPS in eight games leading up to the injury. The 27-year-old was signed by the Twins during spring training and was hitting .255 (24-for-94) with five doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI, 12 runs scored and eight walks in 24 games this season.
Paddack exited his start on Sunday afternoon against Oakland in the third inning. The 26-year-old was acquired by the Twins via trade with the San Diego Padres on April 7 and made five starts for Minnesota this season, going 1-2 with a 4.03 ERA (22.1 IP, 10 ER), two walks, 20 strikeouts and a 1.21 WHIP.
To replace Correa and Paddack on the 26-man roster, the Twins have selected the contracts of outfielder Mark Contreras and right-handed pitcher Jharel Cotton from Triple-A St. Paul. Contreras played in 26 games for the Saints this season, hitting .239 (21-for-88) with five doubles, one triple, five home runs, 17 RBI, 16 runs scored, 14 walks, five stolen bases and a .350 on-base percentage. The Moreno Valley, California native was selected by the Twins in the ninth round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of California, Riverside. The 27-year-old has played parts of five minor league seasons for Minnesota, hitting .230 (320-for-1389) with 78 doubles, 13 triples, 48 home runs, 198 RBI, 221 runs scored, 137 walks, 52 stolen bases and a .313 on-base percentage in 399 games. He will wear uniform number 55 and is looking to make his major league debut. The 30-year-old Cotton made four relief appearances for the Saints, posting a 2.08 ERA (4.1 IP, 1 ER) with three hits allowed, no walks and eight strikeouts. He made the Twins’ Opening Day roster, appeared in two games and pitched 2.0 scoreless innings prior to being designated for release or assignment on April 13.
