Roberto Bautista Agut will progress to the semi-finals of the Miami Open after a dominant performance to knock out top seed Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.
It took the seventh seed just 92 minutes to defeat the Russian, with the Spaniard reaching the tournament’s penultimate stage for the first time, where he will face Jannik Sinner.
The Italian teenager, who Bautista Agut lost against two weeks ago in Dubai, earlier qualified for his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final with victory over Alexander Bublik.
The 19-year-old secured the opening set via a tie-break before overturning a 3-0 deficit in the second to take a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 win in one hour and 41 minutes.
Medvedev mangled his racket in anger after he lost serve to fall behind late in the first set, and little went right for him the rest of the way.
“If he broke a racket, it’s because he lost his patience,” Bautista Agut said. “I think I did some great things to put him under pressure and feel like this.”
Medvedev fell to 0-3 against Bautista Agut, one of the six players left in the men’s draw. None has won a Masters 1000 event.
