Aug. 18: RHP activated Dustin May from the 60-day IL, RHP Reyes Moronta designated for assignment
May, 24, will make the start Saturday night, his first appearance in a Major League game since May 2, 2021, at Milwaukee when he suffered a season-ending elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. He made five rehab starts prior to joining the Dodgers with Triple-A Oklahoma City, going 1-0 with a 1.89 ERA with 33 strikeouts. He has been in the Major Leagues parts of three seasons, and he is a combined 6-5 with a 2.93 ERA with 111 strikeouts in 31 games (19 starts). He was originally drafted in the third round of the 2016 Draft out of Northwest High School in Justin, Texas.
Moronta, 29, made 22 appearances for the Dodgers, allowing 11 earned runs in 23 2/3 innings. He struck out 27 batters and limited hitters to a .198 batting average. He has been in the Majors parts of five seasons with San Francisco (2017-21) and Los Angeles (’22), posting an 8-9 record with a 2.88 ERA and 189 strikeouts in 158 games. He was signed by the Dodgers on March 12, 2022.
Aug. 17: INF Edwin Ríos activated from 60-day IL, optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City
Ríos completed his 20-day rehab assignment with OKC on Aug. 16, but given where the Dodgers are on their roster, the team decided to option him. Ríos hit seven homers in 86 at-bats this season, before sustaining a right hamstring tear on June 2.
LHP Clayton Kershaw (lower back pain)
Expected return: September
Kershaw threw a bullpen session on Aug. 19, his first time throwing off a mound since exiting his start on Aug. 4 at San Francisco after four innings and landing on the 15-day injured list the following day. Dave Roberts said Kershaw’s next move will likely be throwing batting practice or simulated game, and there’s a possibility he’ll be ready to be activated without needing a rehab start. RHP Brusdar Graterol (right shoulder inflammation)
Expected return: Aug. 22
Graterol is close to rejoining the Dodgers as his rehab stint with Triple-A Oklahoma City nears its end. Through four appearances — including one on Aug. 19 — Graterol has allowed one hit and a walk while striking out four over 3 2/3 scoreless innings. (Last updated: Aug. 19)
RHP Yency Almonte (right elbow tightness)
Expected return: Second week of September at earliest
As of Aug. 19, Almonte still hasn’t thrown off a mound since hitting the injured list following his Aug. 3 appearance in San Francisco. Dave Roberts said that Almonte’s recovery is “certainly taking longer than we all had hoped” and said he doesn’t expect Almonte to be ready to return until at least the second week of September. RHP Blake Treinen (right shoulder inflammation)
Expected return: Early September
Treinen pitched in his second rehab game with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Aug. 16, tossing a scoreless inning on 17 pitches. Treinen’s velocity was down for a second consecutive outing, but manager Dave Roberts said there’s no level of concern and it’s just part of the right-hander gaining strength. (Last updated: Aug. 17)
LHP Victor González (left elbow inflammation)
Expected return: September
González made his return to the mound on Aug. 16, tossing a scoreless inning with the ACL Dodgers. It was González’s first appearance in game action since undergoing surgery on his left elbow in May. (Last updated: Aug. 17)
LHP Danny Duffy (left elbow)
Expected return: Unlikely to play this season
Duffy had progressed to facing live hitters, but the veteran left-hander suffered another setback during his rehab process, according to manager Dave Roberts. Duffy experienced more discomfort while throwing a live session in Arizona.
Roberts didn’t want to completely rule out a Duffy comeback this season, but given that the left-hander hasn’t had game action in over a year, the Dodgers’ manager said it was “pretty unlikely” they’ll see Duffy make an appearance down the stretch. (Last updated: Aug. 16)
RHP Tommy Kahnle (right elbow bone bruise)
Expected return: TBD
Kahnle initially made his return on May 1 after missing nearly two seasons due to Tommy John surgery and he appeared in four games before the latest setback. Following days of soreness after his last outing, Kahnle notified the Dodgers on May 16 that he wasn’t recovering as well as he normally does, and he underwent an MRI on May 18. Kahnle was then moved to the 60-day IL on May 28. On July 30, manager Dave Roberts said a 50-50 chance that Kahnle would return this season was a “fair” estimate. (Last updated: July 30)
RHP Walker Buehler (right forearm strain)
Expected return: 2023 season
Buehler, who has been sidelined since June 10 after sustaining a Grade 2 flexor strain, will be shut down for the season after undergoing surgery on his right elbow on Aug. 23. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
Buehler had been taking small steps by playing catch for the first time in late July before the club announced the decision to have season-ending surgery. (Last updated: Aug. 15)
RHP Daniel Hudson (torn left ACL)
Expected return: TBD
Hudson sustained the injury as he and catcher Will Smith tracked down a dribbler off the bat of Ronald Acuña Jr. Hudson’s left knee bent awkwardly when he stepped off the mound. He is likely done for the season. (Last updated: June 25)
OF Kevin Pillar (left shoulder fracture)
Possible return: Out for the season
Pillar, who fractured his left shoulder in the June 1 game vs. the Pirates, underwent a successful surgery on June 7. The surgery will end Pillar’s season. (Last updated: June 10)
RHP Jimmy Nelson (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: Likely out for the season
