The Mexico City Grand Prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez will stay on the Formula 1 calendar until 2025, at least, after signing a three-year extension, both sides said on Thursday.

The deal, announced ahead of Sunday’s grand prix, follows an agreement between the government of Mexico City and promoters CIE.

The grand prix at the capital’s Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez returned to the calendar in 2015 after a 23-year absence. The initial five-year contract was extended in 2019 to the end of this year. This year’s event is expected to attract a three-day crowd of more than 350,000 spectators.

“Every year the race attracts a large number of passionate fans and the atmosphere is incredible,” said F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali. “I know everyone will be excited by this news.

“I am very pleased to announce that Formula 1 will continue to race in Mexico City for another three years under this new agreement. Every year the race attracts a large number of passionate fans, and the atmosphere is incredible, and I know everyone will be excited by this news.”

Local government support and commitment make the race happen

Domenicali added: “I want to thank Claudia Sheinbaum, the Head of Government for Mexico City, and Alejandro Soberon and his team for their ongoing commitment to F1 and the continued success of the event.”

Corporacion Interamericana de Entretenimiento (CIE) President and CEO Alejandro Soberon said: “The Mexico City Grand Prix contract extension has been made possible thanks to the leadership of Claudia Sheinbaum and the Mexico City Government.

“The ability to host the race in the nation’s capital until 2025 is the result of a coordinated effort to preserve an event that brings benefits to the city and excitement to thousands of fans. We will keep working to ensure the race continues to be a strong contributor to our city’s economy.”

“Since we took over the government of Mexico City, we endeavoured to put in place a mechanism that would allow F1 to be held with the participation of entrepreneurs who not only benefit from the event but are also keen to make it happen because they love the city, and they love Mexico,” concluded Soberon.

Local hero, Red Bull veteran  Sergio Perez is aiming to make history, at this weekend’s 22nd Grand Prix in the country, by becoming the first Mexican to win his home race, while teammate Max Verstappen is already the 2022 F1 World Champion while Red Bull sealed the constructors’ crown last weekend in Austin.
