England opener Jason Roy has joined Indian Premier League (IPL) side Sunrisers Hyderabad as a replacement for Australian allrounder Mitchell Marsh.
Marsh, who made his IPL debut in 2010 and has played a total of 21 games, has made himself unavailable for the 2021 season starting next month due to personal reasons.
He was ruled out of the 2020 campaign after Sunrisers’ first match due to an ankle injury and was replaced by West Indies’ Jason Holder.
The IPL said that Roy was acquired by Sunrisers for his base price of 20 million Indian rupees ($A358,300).
Roy also opted out of the Delhi Capitals’ 2020 campaign for personal reasons.
He will work under his old coach Trevor Bayliss, who left the England set-up after helping them win the World Cup, while another Australian David Warner will captain the Hyderabad-based side..
Roy has played a total of eight IPL matches, scoring 179 runs including one half-century.
Having scored 144 runs in the Twenty20 series against India earlier this month before making 115 runs in three ODIs against the same opponents, Roy will also be able to resume his record-breaking partnership with countryman Jonny Bairstow for the Sunrisers.
