Leeds end London hoodoo with EPL win

Patrick Bamford responded to his omission from the England squad with a goal as Leeds ended their misfortunes in London by beating Fulham 2-1 in the Premier League.

Fulham’s defeat meant Scott Parker’s men missed out on a chance to move out of the relegation zone on Friday for the first time since December.

After Bamford’s 29th-minute opener, Fulham’s Joachim Andersen equalised with his first goal for the club before Raphinha notched Leeds’ winner.

Leeds had lost all five of their games in London this season and were winless in their last 16 visits to the capital in all competitions, losing 14 of them.

Leeds took the lead when Jack Harrison’s cross found Bamford, who put it past goalkeeper Alphonse Areola just before the half-hour mark.

Leeds’ advantage did not last long however, with stand-in captain Andersen equalising for Fulham from an Ademola Lookman corner.

The goal was Andersen’s first since his arrival on loan from Lyon in the summer transfer window.

It was also the first time Fulham had scored from a set-piece since December.

At the start of the second half, Fulham succumbed to Leeds’ pressure and broke down in the 58th minute.

Kalvin Phillips dispossessed Mario Lemina, another defensive error from Fulham, before playing the ball through to Bamford who found Raphinha.

The winger slotted the ball past Areola to secure 11th spot for the last season’s Championship winners in the 20-team Premier League.

Goalscorer Bamford told Sky Sports: “The lads deserve a lot of credit because they had to do a lot of my running tonight, because I was struggling a bit from the get-go.

“So they probably had to put more in than they’re used to, and I was just trying to help as much as I could.”

Fulham on the other hand face a tough relegation battle.

“We didn’t deserve anything from the game really and the best team won tonight, to be honest with you,” Parker told Sky Sports.

“The game started and I thought we huffed and puffed and probably were a bit fortunate to go in at 1-1.

“In saying that, the second half then comes along, we miss a massive chance just before they go and score – I think 20 seconds after and they go and score.

“We’ve got eight games now, eight finals.”
