Prior to the Subway Series opener against the Mets, the Yankees placed slugger Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, retroactive to Sunday, with left Achilles tendinitis. The club recalled outfielder Tim Locastro from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
After being out of the starting lineup for three of the Yankees’ first five games of the second half, Stanton requested an MRI on Monday that revealed the tendinitis, according to manager Aaron Boone. The initial timeframe for his return is two to three weeks, though that’s just a loose estimate.
This is the second IL stint this season for Stanton, who was out from late May to early June with a right calf strain. The outfielder, who claimed All-Star Game MVP honors last week in Los Angeles, has 24 homers and 61 RBIs in 80 games this year.
