The shooting of multiple Asian women in Atlanta is the most recent incident of anti-Asian hate crimes, which have been occurring in the U.S. at an alarming rate. Although acts of racism and discrimination against the Asian American and Pacific Islander community are not new, these violent and destructive acts have increased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic, spurred by anti-Asian rhetoric and misinformation about the virus. In our own Bay Area communities, elderly Asians have been targeted in a number of attacks, and Asian-owned businesses have been vandalized or destroyed.
