It’s awards season! The time of year when we at GrandPrix247 look back on the 2022 Formula 1 season and choose who gets one of our awards. Our team boss of the year? Christian Horner.
With the performance Red Bull delivered in 2022, it is only natural that we pick Christian Horner as F1 Team Boss of the Year.
The team was impeccable from the start, the RB18 clearly a rapid creation from Adrian Newey, its early reliability woes put to bed almost immediately, while the team overall was operating on a different level from all angles be it car development, race operations strategies… you name; Red Bull were the team to beat and no one could.
Naturally, Horner was not doing all that on his own, but he was the maestro orchestrating the whole gig, and he kept his whole team on tempo for the whole season when many factors might have derailed their campaign.
Not all smooth sailing
Of course, it wasn’t all rosy for Horner, as the cost cap breach saga is still there in people’s memories, but that mistake was done in 2021, and the manner in which he – supported by his rock Dr. Helmut Marko naturally – navigated the Red Bull ship through that storm was masterful, as the team’s on track performance did not seem to suffer, except for Verstappen’s Singapore weekend maybe.
Moreover, Red Bull were hit by the death of their founder Dietrich Mateschitz over the weekend of the United States Grand Prix, and they reacted in dignity and style clinching their fifth Constructors’ Title as a fitting tribute to their beloved Didi.
Maybe one incident Horner did not deal with properly was the team orders fiasco at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, when Verstappen refused to yield sixth place to Sergio Perez to help him in his fight for runner up in the Drivers’ Championship with Charles Leclerc, but as it turned out that didn’t affect the final outcome, not defending Horner, but just stating the facts.
Overall, Red Bull were the best team in 2022 and were led in the best manner possible by who we and the voting fans believe was the best F1 Team Boss in 2022 – Christian Horner. (Compiled by Jad Mallak)
