Lewis Hamilton has hit back at all the doubters suggesting he might call it time on his Formula 1 career after a difficult start to his 2022 season with a post on social media.
After losing out on his eighth F1 drivers’ crown in 2021, being beaten by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, the Briton was back to have another crack at it in 2022, with everyone expecting him to be firing on all cylinders, but Mercedes have come up with a lemon of a car in the form of the W13, meaning the elusive eighth will have to wait.
Hamilton thus lies seventh in the 2022 F1 Drivers’ Standings despite scoring a third position in the Bahrain Grand Prix and fourth in race at Melbourne, as he mainly capitalized on Red Bull’s reliability woes.
But he finished the last race, the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix 13th after a weekend-long struggle with his viciously “porpoising” Silver Arrow, and was even lapped by his 2021 rival Verstappen during the race.
Ever since, many have been doubting the seven-time World Champion’s ability and motivation, with Red Bull Consultant Helmut Marko even telling Sky Sports: “I mean, he was lapped by us. Maybe he is thinking he should have stopped last year!”
But Hamilton sent yet another message, as he posted on social media: “Working on my masterpiece, I’ll be the one to decide when it’s finished.”
A clear message from the Mercedes ace, that it would not be a smart thing to write him off just yet.
The winner of 103 grands prix was defiant early in the season, when it was becoming clear that Mercedes have dropped the ball with their latest F1 machine, and said that his team “don’t make mistakes” when asked about the matter.
Hamilton, however, has gone back on those claims after his miserable race at Imola and admitted to Sky Sports: “I said we don’t get things wrong, but the fact is, with all the possibilities out there, we may have.”
