In a sensation, Irishman Dennis Hogan is refusing to fight Tim Tszyu in their scheduled super welterweight showdown in Newcastle because of a sponsorship stand-off.
Hogan has been adamant all week that unless he is allowed to wear his betting agency sponsor’s name on his shorts that he will not enter the ring on Wednesday night.
With the fight heavily sponsored by a rival bookmaking organisation, promoters had hoped to resolve the issue but Hogan maintains the fight will not go ahead if he cannot publicly support his sponsor.
The bout was scheduled to take place just after 10pm AEDT.
“I’m not coming out unless I’ve got my sponsors on there,” Hogan said at Tuesday’s weigh-in, before his management team doubled down on the threat on Wednesday night.
“That’s the deal that we’ve done. Everybody is able to wear their sponsors.
“It is unacceptable so I’ll be wearing them, or I won’t be there.
“They supported me through the pandemic … I’ll wear them now when I’m about to have my glorious moment.”
