Oct. 10: Padres reportedly considering Washington
Ron Washington is believed to be a candidate to fill the Padres’ managerial vacancy, according to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman.
Washington, currently the Braves’ third-base coach, was a finalist the last time the Friars’ had an opening. Ultimately, the job went to Jayce Tingler, who was dismissed earlier this month after two seasons at the helm.
Washington would represent a departure from the previous two managerial hires made by San Diego president of baseball operations and general manager A.J. Preller. Neither Andy Green nor Tingler had previous experience managing a big league club before getting the opportunity to manage the Padres.
Washington was the Rangers’ manager from 2007-14 and led the team to back-to-back AL pennants in 2010-11. The 69-year-old has spent the past five seasons as the Braves’ third-base coach.
Oct. 6: Epstein not joining Mets; Beane unlikely?
The Mets’ next president of baseball operations will not be Theo Epstein. It apparently won’t be Billy Beane either.
Epstein, the former Red Sox general manager and Cubs president who won championships with both franchises, emerged in early reports as one of the Mets’ desired candidates to take over their open baseball ops position. But a source tells MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo that following a conversation this week between Epstein and Mets owner Steve Cohen, the two sides agreed that it was not the right opportunity for Epstein to pursue. Oct. 6: Tingler out as Padres manager
Jayce Tingler is out as Padres manager after two seasons. The team announced Wednesday that it was relieving Tingler of his duties and offering him a chance to remain with the organziation in another capacity.
Hired after the team parted ways with Andy Green following the conclusion of the 2019 season, Tingler finished second in the 2020 National League Manager of the Year Award voting after leading the Padres to their first postseason berth since ’06.
The Friars were expected to be one of the game’s best teams in 2021, and for a while, they were. San Diego was 49-33 through the end of June, just 2 1/2 games behind the first-place Giants and tied with the Dodgers in the NL West. But the Padres faded in July and August (combined 23-29) and collapsed in the season’s final month, winning just four of their last 22 games.
Despite the disappointing results in 2021, the Padres still have a lot of talent, headlined by Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado, and a desire to win now.
It will be interesting to see which direction president of baseball operations and general manager A.J. Preller will take his latest managerial search. Neither Green nor Tingler had previous managerial experience in the Majors before being hired by the Padres.
Oct. 6: Will Boone be back with Yanks in 2022?
After another early postseason exit for the Yankees, manager Aaron Boone’s days with the club could be numbered. Boone acknowledged after New York lost to the rival Red Sox in the American League Wild Card Game on Tuesday that his current deal expires after the World Series.
“Obviously my contract is up, and I haven’t had any conversations with anyone about that, so we’ll see,” Boone said. “I love being here. I love going to work with this group and love going to work with this group of players. But we’ll see.”
In four seasons since Boone replaced Joe Girardi as the team’s skipper, the Yankees have recorded a .601 winning percentage and made four playoff appearances. However, the club hasn’t reached the World Series under Boone, losing to Boston in the 2018 ALDS and ’21 AL Wild Card Game, the Astros in the ’19 AL Championship Series and the Rays in the ’20 ALDS. The last time the Yankees appeared in the Fall Classic was 2009, when they won the franchise’s 27th title.
The Yankees were considered by many to be a World Series favorite entering this season, but the club battled inconsistency and needed a win on the final day of the regular season to clinch the second AL Wild Card spot.
Oct. 4: Beane addresses Mets speculation
With the Mets set to revamp their front office, a report surfaced that the organization will ask the A’s for permission to interview long-time executive Billy Beane, who began his tenure with Oakland in 1990 — at the time, he worked with current Mets president Sandy Alderson.
“This has happened through my career,” Beane said. “It’s a credit to the organization and a reflection of the success. It’s all speculation. Normally, the process would involve them calling the owner, which has happened in the past. For me to be worried about this is really to lend credibility to it. It’s all just press reports.” More >
Oct 2: Rockies sticking with Schmidt as GM
The Rockies’ next general manager will not come from outside the organization. Instead, Colorado named 62-year-old Bill Schmidt as the franchise’s fourth full-time GM on Saturday, after the team’s longtime vice president of scouting spent the past five months handling that role on an interim basis.
Schmidt, who took over for Jeff Bridich, will be tasked with building a sustainable winner at Coors Field. That challenge has proven immense over the years. The Rockies have made five postseason trips, including a magical run to the 2007 World Series and back-to-back berths in 2017-18, but they have never won a division title, while losing 90-plus games eight times.
Among Schmidt’s first orders of business will be handling the high-profile pending free agency of shortstop Trevor Story, whom he elected not to trade before the July 30 Deadline.
