ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves on Monday signed catcher Manny Piña to a two-year contract worth $8 million. Piña will make $3.5 million in the first year of his deal, and $4.5 million in 2023. The contract also includes a $4 million club option for 2024 with no buyout.
Piña, 34, hit a career-best 13 home runs over 75 games with the Brewers last season, his sixth year with Milwaukee. His 13.85 AB/HR rate was the ninth best in the National League among players with at least 200 plate appearances.
The 5-foot-11, 216-pound native of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, threw out 11 of 37 potential base stealers (29.7%) in 2021, and for his career, he has caught 34.7% (70-for-202) of runners.
Originally signed by Texas as an undrafted free agent in 2004, Piña made his major league debut in 2011 with Kansas City. After leaving the Royals, he spent time in the minor leagues with Seattle and Detroit before landing with Milwaukee in 2016. He is a career .245 (269-for-1,100) hitter with 42 home runs and a .726 OPS in 409 games.
