Marlins injuries and roster moves

Keep track of the Marlins’ recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season.

Sept. 17: LHP Trevor Rogers exits with left lat discomfort
The Marlins were hopeful Trevor Rogers would build on several strong outings and finish the season on a high note. But that’s in jeopardy now after Rogers exited Saturday’s game against the Nationals with left lat discomfort. Rogers left after just 32 pitches and 1-plus innings in what was his fourth start back from the injured list. He previously missed more than a month with back spasms.

Sept. 17: Jazz Chisholm undergoes knee surgery
Already out for the season with a stress fracture in his back, Chisholm underwent a right knee meniscectomy Friday to clean up an issue he’d played through for much of 2022. The surgery was performed by Dr. Baraga in Miami. Chisholm is scheduled to begin physical therapy for his knee Monday at loanDepot park, alongside his continuing back rehab. He is expected to be ready for Spring Training.

Sept. 17: 1B/DH Garrett Cooper (personal reasons) misses second straight game
Cooper remains with the Marlins as he deals with a family issue that kept him out of the lineup Friday and Saturday. Manager Don Mattingly didn’t specify when Cooper would return, but expressed optimism that Cooper’s absence would be short-lived.

“I think he’ll be back relatively soon,” Mattingly said. “It’s a fairly serious issue. He’s better today. These things guys deal with off the field with their family and things like that are not easy to play with. Yesterday was a rough day, today seems better. We’re hoping tomorrow will be better.”

Sept. 15: RHP Tommy Nance placed on IL; LHP Jake Fishman‘s contract selected
Nance, who previously spent time on the IL with a right groin strain from July 21-Aug. 12, had a 2.45 ERA in 14 2/3 relief innings since his return. Fishman, meanwhile, had his contract selected from Triple-A Jacksonville for what will be his third stint with the big league club.

LHP Daniel Castano (concussion)
Expected return: 2023
Castano had a follow-up MRI on Aug. 29 that revealed a small tear in the SLAP (labrum/top) of the shoulder. Therapy has been recommended to rehab the injury. Castano last started on July 28 and had been progressing through baseball activities in Jupiter, Fla. He sustained a forehead contusion and a mild concussion after a 104 mph comebacker caromed off the brim of his cap — leaving a dent — and was caught by third baseman Joey Wendle for the out. A CT scan came back normal. (Last updated: Sept. 2)

OF Avisaíl García (left hamstring strain)
Expected return:
2022 if possible, ’23 more likely
García, who felt something while warming up before the Marlins’ game against the Mets on Sept. 10, hadn’t played since. He had missed a month with the same injury, then returned on Sept. 6.

“I think the frustration from this injury is the fact that he had worked really hard to kind of get back on the field,” manager Don Mattingly said. “I think we’re still going to see Avi. At least I’m going to say that now. I feel like we’re going to see Avi again before the end of the season. I don’t know how important that is necessarily, but I think for him, he wants to get back.” (Last updated: Sept. 13)

RHP Tommy Nance (right groin strain)
Expected return: 2023
Nance, who last pitched on Sept. 13, spent time on the injured list with the same injury from July 21-Aug. 12. (Last updated: Sept. 15)

2B Jazz Chisholm Jr. (stress fracture in back; knee surgery)
Expected return: 2023
Sidelined since June 28 with a stress fracture in his lower back, Chisholm was already declared done for the season when he underwent a right meniscus repair Sept. 16. He is scheduled to begin rehab for the knee on Sept. 19 in Miami, while also continuing his back rehab. The All-Star infielder is expected to be ready for Spring Training 2023. (Last updated: Sept. 17)

OF Jorge Soler (lower back spasms)
Expected return: 2023
Soler won’t return before the season ends, so the Marlins transferred him to the 60-day injured list on Sept. 15 in order to make room on the 40-man roster for Jake Fishman. Soler left on Sept. 13 for Los Angeles to visit with Dr. Robert Watkins. Soler had been completing baseball activities in Jupiter, Fla. — including taking batting practice on the field on Aug. 29 and hitting in a sim game on Sept. 3 — before having his rehab transferred to Miami on Sept. 9. He last appeared in a big league game on July 22, when he was removed due to back stiffness. (Last updated: Sept. 15)

RHP Anthony Bender (right elbow strain)
Expected return:
Late 2023
Bender underwent Tommy John surgery on Aug. 30 in Los Angeles, with Dr. Neal ElAttrache performing the procedure. His rehab was transferred from Jupiter, Fla., to Miami on Sept. 9. Bender exited five pitches into his outing on Aug. 13. He was placed on the IL on Aug. 14 and transferred to the 60-day IL on Aug. 20. (Last updated: Sept. 9)

RHP Cody Poteet (right elbow UCL tear)
Expected return: 2024
Poteet underwent Tommy John surgery on Aug. 17. Dr. Keith Meister performed the procedure in Arlington. He last pitched July 16, when he allowed five runs in two innings against the Phillies after coming off the IL with a similar right elbow injury. (Last updated: Aug. 19)

RHP Max Meyer (right elbow sprain)
Expected return:
2024
Meyer is heading to Jupiter, Fla., to continue his rehab from Tommy John surgery, which was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Aug. 9 in Los Angeles. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on July 29 after exiting his second MLB start following just 10 pitches on July 23. (Last updated: Aug. 19)

RHP Jordan Holloway (right elbow impingement)
Expected return: 2023
Holloway underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow on Aug. 9 and will not throw for six weeks. The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles. Holloway was moved to the 60-day injured list on Aug. 1 after last pitching on July 25. Holloway missed nearly two months earlier this season. (Last updated: Aug. 15)

RHP Paul Campbell (right elbow strain)
Expected return: 2024
Campbell underwent Tommy John surgery. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on May 26 (retroactive to April 18). (Last updated: Aug. 9)

LHP Sean Guenther (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: 2023
The 26-year-old reliever is not throwing. He underwent the procedure, which was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, on April 7. (Last updated: July 11)

RHP Sixto Sánchez (right shoulder surgery)
Expected return
: TBD
Sánchez was scheduled to be evaluated on Sept. 13 to see whether he could begin throwing again. He had been completing shoulder-strengthening activities in Jupiter, Fla., after he sustained another setback in his rehab when throwing from 60 feet on Aug. 22. He had previously experienced mild shoulder discomfort following a simulated game on Aug. 17. Following the latest setback, the 24-year-old was diagnosed with right shoulder inflammation, and he received a cortisone shot on Aug. 29. Sánchez underwent a procedure on his right shoulder on July 20, 2021. (Last updated: Sept. 13)
