Mets injuries and roster moves

Keep track of the Mets’ recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season.

June 20: RHP Jerad Eickhoff selected from Triple-A Syracuse
With Joey Lucchesi on the injured list, the Mets called upon Eickhoff to provide depth for their pitching staff. He was available out of the bullpen on Sunday and is a starting candidate for Monday’s doubleheader, as well.

June 20: OF Mason Williams designated for assignment
One of the Mets’ injury replacements, Williams hit .212 with a .631 OPS in 17 games. He became expendable with Albert Almora Jr. back from the IL, and Brandon Nimmo due back before the end of the month.

RHP Jacob deGrom (right shoulder soreness)
Expected return: Monday
The Mets haven’t officially announced that deGrom will start Monday, though deGrom himself said he is good to go for the team’s doubleheader against the Braves. He tested his sore right shoulder with a light bullpen session on June 18, before airing it out in a more intensive mound session June 19, followed by another game of catch on June 20. deGrom exited his last start after three innings due to that right shoulder soreness, which he believes was caused by a swing. An MRI administered June 17 revealed nothing abnormal, so deGrom restarted his usual throwing program immediately. (Last updated: June 20)

INF Jeff McNeil (strained left hamstring)
Expected return:
Monday
McNeil has been on a Minor League rehab assignment since June 13, going 6-for-15 with a homer over his first three games with Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets expect him to return to the active roster June 21 at Citi Field. (Last updated: June 19)

LHP Joey Lucchesi (left elbow inflammation)
Expected return:
TBA
The Mets placed Lucchesi on the IL following his longest start of the season on June 18. They have not released a full prognosis or timeline for his return, and won’t do so until he receives an MRI on June 21. Lucchesi began feeling soreness during that June 18 outing. (Last updated: June 20)

OF Brandon Nimmo (detached ligament in left hand)
Expected return:
Late June
Nimmo began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Syracuse on June 20, putting him on track to return before the end of the month. He recently learned that he is not dealing with a nerve issue in his hand, but rather a ligament that partially detached itself from the bone. Nimmo expects that to heal itself over time. (Last updated: June 20)

INF J.D. Davis (left hand sprain)
Expected return:
Early July
Davis hasn’t taken batting practice since the Mets shut down his baseball activities in late May, though he has swung a bat and done infield work. Davis has struggled to shake the discomfort and inflammation that forced him to shut things down several weeks into his initial rehab, then receive a cortisone injection and briefly wear a splint. The Mets don’t expect him to begin a rehab assignment until late June at the earliest. (Last updated: June 16)

OF Michael Conforto (right hamstring strain)
Expected return:
Fourth week in June
Conforto strained his hamstring on the same night as Jeff McNeil, but he will require a few extra days to rehab his injury. After testing his hamstring with daily full-speed baserunning drills at Citi Field, Conforto began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Syracuse on June 16. The Mets expect that to last about a week, after which they will activate him. (Last updated: June 16)

OF Johneshwy Fargas (AC joint sprain in left shoulder)
Expected return:
Late June or July
Fargas has been on the IL since May 25 after crashing into the outfield fence at Citi Field. Although he was feeling much better by early June, Fargas might struggle to find a significant role on the team by the time he is ready to return — if he makes it back onto the big league roster at all. The Mets have since brought in Billy McKinney and Mason Williams, both of whom offer more offensive potential as center fielders. (Last updated: June 4)

RHP Dellin Betances (right shoulder impingement)
Expected return:
Late June/early July
Betances began a Minor League rehab assignment with Low-A St. Lucie on Sunday. He had spent more than two months strengthening his shoulder, with an eye toward boosting his velocity back into the mid-90s. To that end, he hit 94 mph in his first rehab outing — a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. If all goes well on his rehab assignment, he could rejoin the Mets before the All-Star break. (Last updated: June 14)

RHP Tommy Hunter (lower back pain)
Expected return:
Second half of the season
Hunter went on the IL on May 21; he had only played a minimal role for the Mets prior to that assignment. His back was “still bothering him” as of a mid-June update from general manager Zack Scott, and Hunter is not eligible to return from the IL until July 18 at the earliest. (Last updated: June 11)

RHP Carlos Carrasco (torn right hamstring)
Expected return:
Late July
Carrasco has remained sidelined far beyond the team’s initial six-to-eight-week estimate. Most recently, he received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right leg, which forced him to shut down his throwing program. Carrasco is working on strengthening his legs so that his hamstrings will be able to handle the rigors of starting games, but that process continues to take time, and he will need to go through a full Spring Training-style progression once he restarts his mound work. The best-case scenario for Carrasco would be a return shortly after the All-Star break, though it could take longer than that. (Last updated: June 11)

RHP Noah Syndergaard (recovery from Tommy John surgery)
Expected return:
Mid-August at the earliest
Syndergaard was diagnosed with right elbow inflammation after departing a rehab start on May 25 after only one inning. He will refrain from throwing for six weeks and, if all goes well, restart a progression in mid-July. (Last updated: May 27)

RHP Jordan Yamamoto (right shoulder soreness)
Expected return:
TBA
Yamamoto underwent an MRI on May 24 to determine the severity of his injury, which forced him out of a start the previous day. The question is whether the Mets will still have a place in the rotation for Yamamoto, who has pitched to a 14.00 ERA over the past two seasons, when he returns. (Last updated: May 25)

INF José Martínez (torn left knee meniscus)
Expected return:
Second half of the season
When Martínez tore a left knee ligament in March, the Mets estimated his recovery from surgery would take around four months. That puts Martínez on track for a return around the All-Star break at the earliest, though it could take longer than that. (Last updated: May 25)
