The quarterfinals of the NIT are nearly set, as Saturday’s final first round games are all that’s left before the field is whittled down to just eight teams. No. 1 seed Memphis will take on No. 4 seed Dayton and No. 1 seed Saint Louis will play No. 4 seed Mississippi State to close out the opening round action.
Friday’s action featured a couple of solid games as No. 1 seed Colorado State slipped past No. 4 seed Buffalo 75-73. The other No. 1 seed in action slipped up, though, as Ole Miss fell 70-61 against Louisiana Tech.
A handful of teams opted out of consideration, but the NIT still managed to assemble a solid 16-team field. The top four seeds — Colorado State, Memphis, Saint Louis and Ole Miss — were all teams with compelling cases for at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament that were left out of the field of 68. But Richmond, Western Kentucky, NC State, Boise State, Colorado State and Louisiana Tech all had good seasons and are moving on to the quarterfinals. Saturday’s action will determine who joins them.
