Sydney’s rain deluge has forced the postponement of A-League and W-League games between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory as NRL matches go ahead in horrendous conditions.

Following a pitch inspection at Kogarah’s Netstrata Jubilee Stadium at 12.30pm, the double-header was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

More than 100mm of rain had fallen in the 12 hours prior to the pitch inspection and with the heavy rain expected to continue throughout the day, the pitch was considered unplayable.

However Saturday’s NRL matches in Sydney were given the go-ahead by the NRL, despite concerns over the ability of Brookvale Oval to host Manly’s match against South Sydney.

NRL boss Andrew Abdo said the field on Sydney’s Northern Beaches was in good shape ahead of the 5:30pm (AEDT) kick-off.

“I’ve had reports back from Brookvale and the turf is in good shape,” Abdo said.

“Based on how the turf is holding up and how the drainage has been operating, the grounds are not underwater. They’re draining really well. I think we are good to go.”

Penrith’s clash against the Bulldogs at Parramatta’s Bankwest Stadium also went ahead with the field partially underwater on Saturday afternoon.
