Aug. 26: OF Juan Soto day to day with left mid-back tightness
Soto was not in the starting lineup on Friday against the Royals, but he took a full round of batting practice prior to the series opener at Kauffman Stadium.
“He has a smile on his face,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We’ll see how batting practice goes.”
Soto sat for a second straight game on Wednesday as he continues to battle a back issue that flared up on him as he was taking swings in the cage prior to Tuesday’s game against the Guardians.
A day later, Soto said he was feeling better, but the Padres played it safe and opted to keep him out of the lineup.
Aug. 26: RHP Yu Darvish reinstated from paternity list; C Jorge Alfaro (right knee inflammation) placed on 10-day injured list
Darvish, who was originally slated to start Wednesday, returned to the team on Friday and is slated to start on Saturday against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Manager Bob Melvin said that Alfaro will take a little time to heal a knee that “he has been struggling with for awhile.” Alfaro is batting .252 with seven homers and 36 RBIs in 72 games this season.
Aug. 26: C Luis Campusano recalled from Triple-A El Paso; INF Eguy Rosario recalled from Triple-A El Paso; INF Matthew Batten and LHP José Castillo optioned to El Paso
Manager Bob Melvin said Campusano will likely catch on Sunday as left-hander Sean Manaea is scheduled to start the series finale against the Royals. In his first callup this year, Campusano collected his fifth Major League hit on April 26. He is batting .083 with one RBI in 12 at-bats this season for the Padres. In 81 games with El Paso this year, Campusano is hitting .298 with 14 homers and 60 RBIs. He started 60 games behind the plate and 16 as the designated hitter.
Rosario played in 113 games at El Paso, hitting .293 while leading the Pacific Coast League with 32 doubles. He hit 21 homers and drove in 76 runs. “All the hard work has paid off to be here,” Rosario said through an interpreter. “But that’s not enough. Now we’ve got to work even more.”
10-day and 15-day injured lists
C Jorge Alfaro (right knee inflammation)
Expected return: TBD
Alfaro was placed on the 10-day IL on Aug. 26 (retroactive to Aug. 25). Manager Bob Melvin said that Alfaro will take a little time to heal a knee that “he has been struggling with for awhile.” Alfaro is hitting .252 through 72 games with the Padres. RHP Tayler Scott (right middle finger laceration)
Expected return: Early September
Scott sustained a cut on his right middle finger while the Padres were in Washington, after his finger hit a table in his hotel room as he walked past it, per manager Bob Melvin. Scott was added to the IL on Aug. 15, retroactive to Aug. 13. (Last updated: Aug. 15)
SS Fernando Tatis Jr. (left wrist fracture)
Expected return: 2023
Tatis, who underwent surgery to repair the scaphoid bone in his left wrist on March 16, was nearly ready to return when he was suspended for testing positive for Clostebol, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Tatis’ 80-game suspension ended his season and will sideline him for part of next season. While serving the suspension, Tatis revealed that he will undergo surgery to repair his left shoulder, which he has dislocated multiple times in the past. Recovery time for that operation is four to six months. Manager Bob Melvin said the team expects Tatis to be healthy for Spring Training 2023. (Last updated: Aug. 23)
LHP Drew Pomeranz (flexor tendon surgery)
Expected return: Early September
Pomeranz made his fifth rehab appearance on Aug. 19, pitching a scoreless inning for Triple-A El Paso. The Padres continue to be cautious in their approach with Pomeranz, as he hasn’t pitched in a big league game in more than a year. Manager Bob Melvin noted that Pomeranz would likely get a few more rehab outings at El Paso, though those outings will soon become more regular than the every-third-day progression Pomeranz is currently on. The veteran could be a pivotal piece in the Padres’ bullpen down the stretch, having posted a 1.62 ERA across the past two seasons. (Last updated: Aug. 20)
RHP Pierce Johnson (right elbow tendinitis)
Expected return: September
Johnson, one of the more valuable setup weapons in the San Diego bullpen, landed on the IL in late April with right elbow tendinitis. He returned to the mound in July and threw a handful of bullpen sessions, then headed to the team’s complex in Peoria, Ariz., where he began to face hitters in mid-August. He could begin a rehab stint imminently, lining him up for a September return. (Last updated: Aug. 18)
RHP Craig Stammen (right shoulder inflammation)
Expected return: September
Stammen was transferred to the 60-day IL on Aug. 16 after he began throwing and playing catch at 90 feet in early August. On Aug. 8, he said his shoulder already felt much better than it had during his final few outings, though the Padres aren’t going to rush him back to action. It’s unclear when Stammen might return to the mound and begin throwing bullpen sessions, but the team is hopeful to have him available for the stretch run. (Last updated: Aug. 16)
RHP Austin Adams (flexor tendon surgery)
Expected return: 2023
Adams experienced tightness in his right forearm on April 12 and was diagnosed with a right forearm strain. He underwent flexor tendon surgery on Aug. 6, effectively ending his 2022 season after just two appearances. (Last updated: Aug. 6)
