PITTSBURGH — Hits are overrated, apparently.
The Pirates didn’t record a single hit Sunday afternoon at PNC Park. They did not lose. Thanks to three straight walks and a fielder’s choice in the eighth inning, the Pirates squeezed out enough offense to beat the Reds, 1-0. That’s about as unique as wins get.
Pittsburgh became the sixth team in the Modern Era to win a game without registering a single hit. The last team to not have a hit and still win was the Dodgers on June 28, 2008, who were collectively held hitless by Jered Weaver and Jose Arredono.
On Sunday, the Pirates were held without a hit by Hunter Greene and Art Warren. Greene walked two batters in the bottom of the eighth inning before being pulled. Warren walked the first batter he faced, loading the bases with one out. With the bases full, Ke’Bryan Hayes legged out a potential inning-ending double play, beating the throw to first to allow Rodolfo Castro to score from third base.
