Reds injuries and roster moves

Keep track of the Reds’ recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season.

April 26: Jonathan India reinstated from injured list
India was reinstated from the 10-day injured list on April 26. Infielder Matt Reynolds was also added to the 28-man roster and the Reds optioned IF Alejo Lopez to Triple-A and designated IF/OF JT Riddle for assignment.

India had been sidelined with a right hamstring strain since April 14 vs. the Dodgers.

“Feels great. I’m ready to go. Let’s see what happens,” India said. — Mark Sheldon

C Tyler Stephenson (concussion symptoms)
Expected return: TBD
Stephenson has done very little in terms of baseball work and wears sunglasses on the field to minimize light sensitivity since he was placed on the seven-day concussion injured list on April 20. That roster move came after a home-plate collision with the Padres’ Luke Voit the previous day.

The Reds are not planning on activating Stephenson when he is eligible, and his time away will likely stretch into early May.

“We’re being very cautious, as you can imagine,” Reds manager David Bell said. “Getting better each day, trending in the right direction, but not going to be ready to play. He might not even go on the [next] road trip. That’s not a sign he’s going to be out long term or anything. It just might be we determine he’s not going to play on the road trip, but it could be immediately after that. If that’s the case, we’d avoid him traveling and going to Colorado and all of that, just to play it safe.” — Mark Sheldon (Last updated: April 24)

10-day and 15-day injured lists

RHP Luis Castillo (right shoulder soreness)
Expected return: Early-to-mid May
Castillo came out of his first rehab assignment start at High-A Dayton on April 24 with no issues. He pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run, two hits and three walks with four strikeouts while throwing 48 pitches.

“It was what you’d expect. He was healthy,” Reds manager David Bell said. “He’s on track to get another start. I would anticipate two more before we’d see him here, so he’ll have two more rehab starts. It was a good day. Typical Luis, had some strikeouts, got his pitch count up to where we needed it to be. Successful.”

Castillo is scheduled to make his next rehab start on April 29 for Triple-A Louisville at Columbus — Mark Sheldon (Last updated: April 26)

SS Jose Barrero (left wrist surgery)
Expected return: Late May
Barrero, who had surgery in March to repair a broken hook of hamate bone, started swinging a bat on April 20 at the team’s complex in Goodyear, Ariz.

“He’s playing defense already and running. The last thing he’s going to need to do is build up his swinging tolerance,” Reds manager David Bell said.

Even with injuries piling up and no space on the 40-man roster, the Reds don’t plan to move Barrero to the 60-day IL.

“We’ve considered that, but we’ve not done it because we think he can be back before,” Bell said. “… He can beat it by a couple of weeks.” — Mark Sheldon (Last updated: April 20)

3B Mike Moustakas (right biceps strain)
Expected return: Late April
Moustakas was scratched from the lineup on April 18, and the move was made the following day to put him on the IL after an exam. — Mark Sheldon (Last updated: April 19)

INF Donovan Solano (left hamstring)
Expected return:
Mid- to late April
With Solano’s progress continuing, Bell was optimistic the infielder could begin a rehab assignment soon.

“He’s getting close,” Bell said. “… He may stop off in Arizona and get a lot of at-bats for a couple of days.” — Mark Sheldon (Last updated: April 18)

LHP Mike Minor (left shoulder soreness)
Expected return:
Mid-May
Minor’s shoulder was examined in Cincinnati recently by medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek, and no serious issues were found after the pitcher reported soreness during his rehab assignment start on April 13 for Double-A Chattanooga. (He allowed six runs in one inning.) Minor worked out on April 18 at Great American Ball Park and could soon resume throwing.

“Initially, we thought he would have to start his whole progression over,” Bell said. “But I guess in a way he does, but he was also built up. So it wouldn’t be like Day 1 of Spring Training. The main thing was getting that soreness out.” — Mark Sheldon (Last updated: April 18)

RHP Daniel Duarte (right elbow swelling)
Expected return: TBD
The Reds announced on April 23 that Duarte had been transferred from the 10-day to the 60-day injured list. Duarte had been called up from Triple-A Louisville on April 16, pitching an inning against the Dodgers and allowing one run, then went on the IL the next day. — Luca Evans (Last updated: April 23)

IF/OF Max Schrock (left calf strain)
Expected return:
Mid June
Schrock exited on April 3 vs. Arizona after sustaining a strained left calf. He grounded out sharply in the second inning, but he was unable to make it down the first-base line. Manager David Bell confirmed on April 4 that Schrock would be shut down for the next four to six weeks due to the ailment and would initially remain in Arizona to receive treatment. The timing couldn’t be worse for Schrock, who was in strong consideration to make the Opening Day roster after a torrid spring. Across 11 Cactus League games, he slashed .609/.630/.826. — Jesse Borek (Last updated: April 5)

RHP Justin Dunn (shoulder)
Expected return: TBD
Dunn will be sidelined with a shoulder issue that was not unexpected for the Reds. The 26-year-old, who was acquired in a deal from the Mariners, last pitched in a big league game on June 17 and missed the rest of the season with right shoulder inflammation.

“We knew that when we traded for him,” manager David Bell said. “It’s going to be a couple of months before we see him pitch.” — Mark Sheldon (Last updated: March 22)

RHP Tejay Antone (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: 2023
Antone had Tommy John surgery performed on his right elbow on Aug. 27 by team medical Dr. Tim Kremchek in Cincinnati. It is Antone’s second such surgery on the elbow after he also had one as a Minor Leaguer in 2017.

The Reds activated Antone on Aug. 24 after he missed 52 games with a right forearm strain. Five pitches into his return during the eighth inning of a 7-4 loss to the Brewers, he grabbed his arm in pain and left the game. — Mark Sheldon (Last updated: Aug. 27)
