MAGNO'S BULGING MAIL SACK: TANK, ROLLY, CANELO-GGG 3

Every Thursday here at Fight Hype, I pull out my gigantic, bulbous, bulging sack and give truth-minded boxing fans a gander. This week, I shoot ropes of truth all over comments/questions regarding Tank Davis, Rolly Romero, and Canelo-Golovkin 3.

Tank vs. Rolly

Hi Paul

Whenever I want to imagine how a fight would go sometimes I make “Crazy” assumptions. For the Saturday fight, my mind believes that Rolly is a big guy. I have looked at his fights (I know, what a horrible and unorthodox fighthing style), but I am struggling to see how he can make 135. He looks like a middleweight, and I’m pretty sure he hydrates around that weight during his fights.

Tank has the height and size of a 122 lb. fighter, but he can punch like a welterweight. Based on these assumptions, I believe Rolly will make things complicated for Tank and I wouldn’t be surprised if he knocks him down once. But at the end of the day, I believe Tank’s talent and speed will be enough for him to get a UD. You might just see Tank steamrolling him and I wouldn’t blame you.

Best Regards.

— Miguel

Hey Miguel.

Common sense would seem to scream early knockout obliteration for Tank Davis. Romero has a ton of defensive flaws, notably a penchant for keeping his head high and his chin way up in the air during exchanges. Technically, the guy is just a mess (although he has improved a bit in recent outings).

What puts a bit of a doubt in my mind is how Davis performed in the Isaac Cruz fight and how much trouble he seemed to have with an awkward, come-forward, free-swinging opponent. Romero is not the same type of fighter as Cruz, but he’s just as aggressive and just as awkward in his own way. Plus, he’s bigger and heavier-handed than Cruz. Davis passed off the less-than-dominant performance against Cruz as a result of a hand injury. Maybe. But if it’s a style-based chink in his armor and Davis is simply troubled by the kind of chaos fighters like Cruz and Romero bring, he could find himself in more trouble than anyone imagined.

Having said that, though, Davis will have plenty of opportunities for a highlight reel knockout against Romero and it’s very possible he ends the show before any drama can even begin. Romero, however, also has fight-ending power and won’t stop coming forward, trying to land something big. It should be a good fight while it lasts.

Free Agent Tank?

Hi Paul.

With Tank’s contract ending with Mayweather Promotions after this Rolly Romero fight, where do you see him going? I’d say that Mayweather may try screwing an outgoing Tank Davis with the judges like Bob Arum does with outgoing contract players, but we all know that Tank-Rolly isn’t going the distance. So, where do you think Davis ends up? I can totally see Eddie Hearn swooping in and signing him with his billionaire DAZN bucks, just to rile up feud buddy Leonard Ellerbe. What say you?

– Damon

Hey Damon.

If Gervonta Davis is smart, he’ll become a free agent and stay a free agent, negotiating with promoters/networks on a fight-by-fight basis. That’s where the money is. But that also requires some hard work and business savvy that he may or may not have. So, it could very well be easier to just sign a multi-fight deal with some promoter or network.

Arum/Top Rank have Teofimo Lopez, Vasiliy Lomachenko, Shakur Stevenson, Josh Taylor, and now Devin Haney. If Davis wants blockbuster legacy-builders, that’s where to go. Hearn doesn’t really have anything to offer Davis, except for his relationship with DAZN and, through that relationship, a chance at Golden Boy’s Ryan Garcia.

But, like I said, I’d stay a free agent if I were Tank Davis. The money would be better and he’d have the freedom to lay out his career however he likes.

Canelo-Golovkin 3

Hey Magno.

I guess Canelo’s pushing off a Bivol rematch for the Golovkin fight in September. Do you think the loss to Bivol is going to have any effect on how he does against GGG? Why do you think he took this route rather than going straight back at Bivol? Do you got an early prediction for Canelo-GGG 3?

– Luis

Hey Luis.

I think, if anything, Canelo will be in a pissy mood against Golovkin and sporting a huge chip on his shoulders. This should make for a more entertaining fight for the fans and a rougher time for Golovkin.

The crazy thing is that Triple G could’ve done pretty much the same thing to Canelo that Bivol did– he had the jab and the physical presence to do it– but he was (gulp) intimidated by the moment and/or Canelo. I don’t expect him to follow Bivol’s blueprint in this upcoming fight, nor do I think he could even execute it at this point. But there was a window of opportunity back in 2017 and 2018.

I think Canelo beats Golovkin down in this third fight and I wouldn’t be surprised if he even stopped him late.

As for why Canelo is going to the Golovkin fight first, before a Bivol rematch? It probably has to do with business. Eddie Hearn and DAZN have probably been tugging deferentially at his pants leg to get this big fight on the ledger before something can come along and ruin what they feel will be a major money fight for them. From Canelo’s side, it also makes some sense to put off the Bivol fight and give himself more time to train and strategize for what is clearly a more complex task.
