Tigers injuries and roster moves

Keep track of the Tigers’ recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season.

May 14: Michael Pineda exits with fractured right middle finger
Tigers starter Michael Pineda left his start Saturday against the Orioles after just 1 1/3 innings, following a 105.9 mph Ramón Urías line drive that struck his right hand. Initial tests later revealed a fractured right middle finger.

“He’ll go through a battery of tests, see a couple experts and we’ll see how long it takes us him to heal up,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “But disappointing news, to say the last.”

Detroit already has an injury-depleted rotation with Casey Mize, Tyler Alexander and Matt Manning out. Rookies Alex Faedo and Beau Brieske have been filling in, and Joey Wentz made a spot start earlier this week. Brieske is likely to keep his rotation spot for a while with Mize’s rehab slowed. Faedo could stick in rotation after Manning returns. — Jason Beck

OF Austin Meadows (inner ear infection)
Expected return
: Day-to-day
Meadows worked out with the team on the field Saturday. He has been dealing with dizziness, but felt much improved from Friday, when he saw a doctor.

“It’s been weird,” said Meadows, who missed time with a sinus infection last week. “It just feels like you’re kind of dizzy all the time, kind of off-balance. … It kind of feels like the room’s spinning at all times. I don’t know if it’s vertigo, but it kind of feels like something like that. Just physically, it doesn’t feel right. Hopefully I get back soon.”– Jason Beck (Last updated: May 14)

RHP Casey Mize (right elbow sprain)
Expected return:
Possibly June
Mize had a rough outing on May 12 in his first rehab start for Triple-A Toledo, allowing three singles, a three-run homer and hitting a batter before leaving with two outs in the first inning. He threw 29 pitches, 16 for strikes. He’ll return to Lakeland for more mound work. — Jason Beck (Last updated: May 14)

OF Victor Reyes (left quad strain)
Expected return: Possibly May 15
Reyes made another rehab start for Triple-A Toledo on Friday against Louisville, going 2-for-5 with a two-run homer. He’ll have Saturday off before the Tigers decide his next step, but manager A.J. Hinch didn’t rule out Reyes rejoining the team for its upcoming road trip. — Jason Beck (Last updated: May 14)

RHP Matt Manning (right shoulder discomfort)
Expected return:
Possibly May 23-24
Manning threw 3 2/3 innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts Friday in his second rehab start for Triple-A Toledo, throwing 57 pitches. He’ll make one more start for the Mud Hens next week, stretching out to 75-80 pitches, before being re-evaluated for a return to the Tigers rotation. — Jason Beck (Last updated: May 14)

LHP Tyler Alexander (left elbow sprain)
Expected return
: Possibly June
Alexander is doing some light throwing and plyo-ball work as part of a strengthening program at the Tigers’ Spring Training facility. — Jason Beck (Last updated: May 14)

C Jake Rogers (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return
: Mid to late 2022
Rogers has begun catching, having caught bullpen sessions for Casey Mize and Matt Manning while they were working out in Lakeland, Fla., at the start of May. He’s still quite a ways off from game action, but he is making progress. — Jason Beck (Last updated: May 9)

RHP Kyle Funkhouser (right shoulder strain)
Expected return: TBD
Funkhouser continues to be limited to non-throwing rehab activities. He won’t begin throwing work again until June on advice from doctors after experiencing issues when trying to resume throwing last month. — Jason Beck (Last updated: May 4)

RHP José Cisnero (right shoulder strain)
Expected return: TBD
Cisnero is progressing well in his rehab at the Tigers’ Spring Training facility and could begin a rehab assignment by the end of the month. — Jason Beck (Last updated: May 4)

RHP Spencer Turnbull (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return:
Possibly late 2022
Turnbull reported to Spring Training on March 16 in Lakeland, Fla., where he’ll continue his rehab. He had been working out and throwing three days a week at Tread Athletics, a pitching-focused training facility in Charlotte, N.C. Though the Tigers haven’t released a timetable, Turnbull hopes to pitch at some point this season. — Jason Beck (Last updated: March 16)
