Formula 1 championship leader Charles Leclerc crashed the iconic Niki Lauda Ferrari 312 B3 during a demonstration lap at the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix Historique.
Apparent brake failure when driving at pace late in Leclerc’s demo lap session on his home track, with Jacky Ickx in a Ferrari 312 B2, meant he lost the rear end of the car which crunched its rear end into the wall.
The current Ferrari driver was at the wheel of the car that Lauda drove during the 1974 season, the great Austrian’s first year with the Italian team, for a handful of demonstration laps on his home circuit.
Leclerc was nearing the end of his time on track when he went deep into La Rascasse corner, lost control of the rear of the car, spun and crashed rear-end first into the barriers.
He tried to continue but the rear wing was bent and rubbing on the rear tyres forcing him to pull over on the main straight. Last year former Ferrari driver Jean Alesi also crashed the 1974 car during the Historique weekend.
Leclerc wrote on Twitter: “When you thought you already had all the bad luck of the world in Monaco and you lose the brakes into rascasse with one of the most iconic historical Ferrari Formula 1 car.”
Leclerc now heads to the Spanish Grand Prix, leading the 2022 F1 championship, after the first five rounds, and hoping to stay out of the Circuit de Barcelona barriers no doubt!
