White Sox injuries and roster moves

Keep track of the White Sox recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season.

Aug. 27: Yoán Moncada (left hamstring) placed on 10-day IL, INF/OF Leury García activated from 10-day IL
The switch-hitting third baseman, who was injured in Thursday’s loss to the Orioles, is slashing .197/.269/.313 with seven home runs, 40 RBIs and 28 runs scored over 80 games.

García was placed on the injured list on Aug. 17 with a lower back strain. He began his rehab assignment Friday night with Triple-A Charlotte, going 1-for-4 as the designated hitter. García is slashing .212/.238/.275 with eight doubles, three home runs, 19 RBIs and 35 runs scored in 83 games this season.

Lynn, 35, is 3-5 with a 5.00 ERA and 83 strikeouts over 14 starts this season. Over five starts in August, he’s 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA, three walks and 34 strikeouts. Lynn must remain on the bereavement list for a minimum of three days and not more than seven.

Martin won his last start in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Aug. 9 at Kansas City, allowing one run on three hits over 5 2/3 innings. He is 5-5 with a 5.08 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 16 starts this season between Charlotte and Double-A Birmingham.

Aug. 26: Luis Robert (left hand bone bruise) could miss the weekend
Manager Tony La Russa said Robert would be available to pinch-hit this weekend if needed, although Robert looked to be having trouble on some swings in Baltimore. They are hoping three days off and Monday’s off day for the team will have Robert ready to go by Tuesday and allow him to avoid a trip to the IL.

“We’re going to be just concerned, if he keeps getting sore it’s not going to get better,” La Russa said. “Got tested today, he’s got a little inflammation from just bruising it. Be careful with it and try to get him well.”

3B Yoán Moncada (left hamstring strain)
Expected return: TBD
This is Moncada’s third trip to the injured list this season. The 27-year-old started the year on the IL with a right oblique strain, and after returning on May 9, he was placed on the IL on June 18 with a strained right hamstring.

C Yasmani Grandal (left knee strain)
Expected return: Aug. 31
Grandal headed to Memphis, Tenn., on Thursday to join up with Triple-A Charlotte for a rehab assignment as he tests his left knee.

Manager Tony La Russa expects Grandal to be able to rejoin the team next week. Chicago will be home in the midst of nine games in 10 days at Guaranteed Rate Field against Arizona, Kansas City and Minnesota. La Russa called Grandal’s recovery this week “amazing.” (Last updated: Aug. 25)

RHP Michael Kopech (left knee strain)
Expected return:
Early September
Kopech was placed on the 15-day IL with a left knee strain after leaving his start at Kansas City on Aug. 22 after facing only four batters. The right-hander was relieved the diagnosis was not a more severe issue, and he believes this rest will do him good as the team makes a final push.

“Absolutely, because if it was something that was severe I could potentially be missing the rest of the season,” Kopech said. “I am very fortunate that is not the case and I have a chance to come back and continue pitching, helping the team win. It’s not ideal to go on the IL, but to know that I can come back and maybe make a stronger push at the end, that’s a good thing for me.”

He will take a couple of days off before building back up with cardio, then wait a few more days before throwing again.

“[This] could be a blessing in disguise for him to get two weeks where he can just not get to where he was pushed too far,” said manager Tony La Russa. (Last updated: Aug. 23)

RHP Kyle Crick (right elbow inflammation)
Expected return: TBD
The veteran reliever has not pitched for Chicago since June 13.

“He’s still in the rehab process,” White Sox assistant general manager/player development Chris Getz said. “Still trying to figure out what exactly is going on, health-wise. We’re putting a plan together with him right now. I don’t know precisely what the next step is, though.” (Last updated: Aug. 20)

LHP Aaron Bummer (left lat strain)
Expected return:
September
Bummer, who has been on the injured list retroactive to June 9 with a left lat strain, threw a 26-pitch bullpen with a full mix of pitches prior to the club’s Aug. 18 game against the Astros. Bummer hopes to throw one more bullpen and a simulated game or two before moving on to Triple-A Charlotte for a rehab assignment. He’s still hopeful for a return to the big leagues in September.

“We didn’t expect to pick up a baseball and feel 100%. We just wanted to climb and keep moving forward and not necessarily take a step back,” Bummer said. “But probably [within] four to five days, it took a jump forward — just shoulder/lat — just everything started to feel better each and every day. And we’re finally at a point that off a mound, it felt pretty decent.” (Last updated: Aug. 18)

SS Tim Anderson (left middle finger tear)
Expected return: September
Anderson was set undergo surgery on Aug. 11 to repair a left middle finger tear that was expected to sideline him for approximately six weeks. (Last updated: Aug. 9)

RHP Jonathan Stiever (right lat surgery)
Expected return:
TBD
Stiever, 25, underwent season-ending surgery on his right lat on Aug. 23, 2021. He spent most of last season with Triple-A Charlotte but made one start for Chicago. Stiever is currently working out in Arizona, per White Sox assistant general manager/player development Chris Getz.

“We’ve been very careful with his rehab. He’s feeling good, he’s throwing bullpens, he’s nearly at some live BPs,” Getz said. “And the plan is for him to get some innings at some point.” (Last updated: Aug. 20)

SS Danny Mendick (torn ACL in right knee)
Expected return: TBD
A day after colliding with left fielder Adam Haseley on Santiago Espinal’s foul popup in the second inning, Mendick was placed on the 10-day IL with a torn ACL in his right knee. On July 6, he was transferred to the 60-day injured list. (Last updated: July 6)

LHP Garrett Crochet (UCL damage)
Expected return:
Out for the season
Crochet was set to move into the Michael Kopech starter/reliever hybrid role in 2022, but he underwent Tommy John surgery on April 5 and was transferred to the 60-day IL on May 17. (Last updated: May 17)
