Connecticut Sun forward Jonquel Jones is the MVP of the 2021 season, the WNBA announced Tuesday. Jones is the best player on the No. 1 seed Connecticut Sun, who begin their playoff run Tuesday night at 8 p.m. when they host the Chicago Sky in Game 1 of the semifinals.
Jones averaged 19.4 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.3 blocks per game. Her previous career high scoring average was 15.4. This year she truly reached her offensive potential, which was always sky high. Her assist average was 1.1 better than her previous career best and her steal average tied her career high. Jones actually averaged more rebounds (11.9) in 2017 and more blocks (two) in 2019.
Jones winning the MVP award comes as no surprise as she was clearly the frontrunner. Breanna Stewart of the Seattle Storm, Brittney Griner of the Phoenix Mercury, A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces and Tina Charles of the Washington Mystics were also in the running.
