For comparison, Kyle Schwarber and Kris Bryant had 621 and 773 PAs in the Minors, respectively, before breaking into the Majors.nnAs the story goes, Hoerner was sitting on his couch at home in California in September of 2019 when the Cubs called him up after his Double-A season. The kid hit the ground running with a three-hit MLB debut and a .351 average (.968 OPS) in his first nine games. Nico Hoerner did all he could to force the Cubs’ hand — showing up with a new physique, refined swing and spraying line drives all over the field — but Chicago plans on prioritizing his development right now. The Cubs optioned Hoerner along with left-handed pitcher Brad Wieck to Triple-A Iowa on Saturday.

Before Spring Training began for the Cubs, there was no real clarity over how the team would handle its vacancy at second base. At the time, president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer summed it up as a wide-open competition.

“I think we all want someone just to kind of grab hold of it,” Hoyer said, “and kind of force their name into the lineup every day.”

The roster ramifications of the move are that the more seasoned David Bote would be in line for regular playing time at second base. Both Bote (1.065 OPS through 38 Cactus League at-bats) and Hoerner (1.039 OPS through 36 at-bats) have enjoyed stellar offensive showings this spring.

Veteran Eric Sogard, who has been in camp as a non-roster invitee, is also in line for a spot on the Opening Day roster. Utility man Ildemaro Vargas (out of Minor League options) is a bench candidate, as well. They have also had solid showings at the plate and in the field this spring.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Jesse Rogers first reported the Cubs’ decision on Hoerner late Friday night, noting that Chicago can gain an extra year of control over Hoerner if the infielder stays in the Minors for 36 days. While that is true, there are plenty of other factors in play.

Events of the past two seasons forced Hoerner to the Majors faster than initially anticipated, following his selection in the first round of the 2018 MLB Draft. Injuries led to Hoerner’s emergency promotion late in ’19 and the absence of a Minor League season (plus expanded MLB rosters) contributed to his sticking with the Cubs throughout ’20.

This is where it is worth noting that the 23-year-old Hoerner was a Gold Glove finalist at second base in 2020, since defense will be critical for the Cubs this year with such a contact-based pitching staff. That said, Hoerner also labored in the batter’s box last year, hitting .222 (.571 OPS) in 48 games.

It is also fair to note that Hoerner has only logged 375 plate appearances in his Minor League career, which has yet to include any time with Triple-A Iowa. For comparison, Kyle Schwarber and Kris Bryant had 621 and 773 PAs in the Minors, respectively, before breaking into the Majors.

As the story goes, Hoerner was sitting on his couch at home in California in September of 2019 when the Cubs called him up after his Double-A season. The kid hit the ground running with a three-hit MLB debut and a .351 average (.968 OPS) in his first nine games. He homered in his first-ever at-bat at Wrigley Field on Sept. 13 that fall.

From there, Hoerner has struggled in the batter’s box at the MLB level. Dating back to Sept. 18, 2019, he has turned in a .221/.287/.275 slash line in 167 plate appearances for the Cubs. That is why Hoerner spent his offseason in Chicago, working closely with assistant hitting coach Chris Valaika on some small, but important swing changes.

Hoerner also took advantage of the Cubs’ resources at Wrigley Field over the winter months, focusing on his nutrition and workouts and arriving to Arizona looking noticeably stronger. He then started his Cactus League slate with a 7-for-8 (.875) showing that included hard-hit liners from line to line.

When the Cubs added Sogard to the fold early in camp on a Minor League deal, it complicated the situation. Bote and Hoerner both bat righty, while Sogard (lefty) and Vargas (switch-hitter) provide potential complementary options for certain matchups.

At least for the start of the season, Cubs manager David Ross will work with a combination of those more experienced players.

“We try to take the information, the performance, the person, the roster,” Ross said in early March. “There’s a lot more that goes into it. Some of it’s in Nico’s control and some of it isn’t, to be honest.”
