Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, who had been scheduled to start on Opening Day for the Red Sox, will be pushed back because he’s going through a “dead arm” period, according to manager Alex Cora. Righty Nathan Eovaldi will take his place against the Orioles on April 1 at Fenway Park.
Cora added that there’s a chance Rodriguez might not land on the injured list, though the team has not yet projected when he might take the mound again.
Eovaldi also replaced Rodriguez last season on Opening Day, as Rodriguez missed the entire 2020 season while recovering from myocarditis.
Eovaldi went 4-3 with a 3.72 ERA in nine 2020 starts. After struggling most of the spring, he threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings against the O’s on Wednesday.
