Frank Warren has defended Chris Eubank Sr’s request to pull out Chris Eubank Jr from his bout with Conor Benn over weight-making issues. The British promoter believes the fight is “dangerous” and shares Eubank Sr’s concerns.
Benn and Eubank Jr square off on October 8 in a 157lb catchweight contest at the O2 Arena, London. The agreed limit will be completely foreign to both men with Benn having never fought above welterweight (147lb) and Eubank Jr competing no lower than middleweight (160lb) during the course of his career.
Given the serious health implications of excessive weight cutting, Eubank Sr advised his son to reconsider the fight, however, Eubank Jr and promoter Kalle Sauerland have since come out to confirm that the fight is still on.
But Warren – who has butted heads with Eubank Sr on multiple occasions in the past – is in agreement with the legendary British boxer. Speaking to Seconds Out, he said: “I know the old man Eubank has been making some quite relevant remarks about this weight-making situation because that is dangerous, the biggest problem for boxers’ injuries, head injuries is all about dehydration.
“I don’t care who you are especially when you get older to do those sorts of things and his dad’s pointed it out quite rightly. That’s up to the board of control to monitor and they’ve got a big responsibility because the eyes of everyone will be on this and hopefully it will go well.”
