Pirelli CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera

In the wake of Pirelli extending to continue as Formulas 1 tyre supplier until the end of 2024, CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera is wishing what all true Formula 1 fans want for 2021, namely a strong Ferrari team.

In the final year of the rules which allowed Mercedes to dominate relentlessly, it is unlikely that much will change in terms of pecking order, however, with positive noises coming out of Maranello regarding the return of thus AWOL cavalinos that went astray in 2020.

Suggesting the Reds have re-discovered the magic button in their power unit package, which is music for Provera’s ears: “We are neutral, but a fast Ferrari would be good Formula 1.

“The time will come when we can also win a World Championship with them. In recent years we have always won with Mercedes but we have seen some interesting races, never predictable,” Provera told Il Foglio.

Pirelli have yet to shod a Ferrari F1 world championship-winning car; the team’s last title was with Bridgestone when Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa claimed back to back constructors’ titles in 2007 and 2008.

Before that, during the Michael Schumacher era, Pirelli were not on the F1 scene which was shared by Bridgestone and Michelin at the time.

This past week, on the occasion of the contract extension with F1, Provera said: “We’re obviously pleased to have reached this agreement that will extend our presence at the pinnacle of world motorsport until 2024.

“Pirelli has been alongside Formula 1 for more than 70 years, since the very first race in 1950, and the company continues to invest in the highest technological levels of research and development, as shown by the introduction of 18-inch tyres from next year.

“Motorsport forms part of our DNA and Formula 1 represents an open-air laboratory that allows us to apply the know-how gained on track into our road car tyres, starting off with the Ultra High-Performance range that equips the most prestigious cars in the world.”
