The Seattle Storm earned their second three-point overtime win in a row on Tuesday night as a Breanna Stewart triple with 2:37 left in the extra frame proved to be the difference after the Connecticut Sun’s Jasmine Thomas turned the ball over when her team had a chance to tie with 3.9 ticks remaining.
Stewart’s three made the score 90-84. Jonquel Jones answered with a trey one minute and 27 seconds later and her 28 points and 13 rebounds nearly kept the Sun undefeated.
J. Thomas missed a 3-pointer that would have tied it with 39.2 seconds to go. That gave Seattle the chance to make it a two-possession game while leaving less than a shot clock’s worth of time left on the clock. But Brionna Jones blocked a Mercedes Russell shot at 16.7 seconds remaining, giving Connecticut one more possession with the chance to tie.
That’s when J. Thomas picked up her dribble and was forced to make a pass inside to B. Jones and it got away from her. The Storm held on to win 90-87 at Angel of the Wings Arena.
Seattle opened overtime on an 8-0 run behind two threes from Sue Bird, who led her team with 21 points. Stewart was good for 17 points and 12 rebounds and Jewell Loyd had 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Brionna Jones aided J. Jones with 19 points and six boards in defeat.
DiJonai Carrington scored the first and only bench points for the Sun on a reverse layup that tied the game with 15.3 seconds remaining in regulation. The Storm had led by six with 3:01 to play.
Seattle is looking good at 4-1. They are in third place behind the Sun and Liberty, who are both 5-1.
The Storm beat Dallas 100-97 in overtime on Saturday.
Other action
Washington Mystics (2-3) over Indiana Fever (1-5), 85-69
Tina Charles notched her third 30-point game in a row, upping her season average to 26.2, which is 2.2 points ahead of Breanna Stewart for the WNBA lead. And, as our Cat Ariail pointed out in her Mystics preview on Tuesday, it would be by far the best scoring average for a player age 32 or older in WNBA history if the season ended today (3.5 ahead of Cynthia Cooper’s 22.7 points at age 35 in 1998).
Myisha Hines-Allen backed Charles up with 15 points and 10 rebounds after being held scoreless in Washington’s loss to Indiana on Sunday. Ariel Atkins notched 18 points and dished out four assists for a Mystics team that was up 49-35 at the break.
Jessica Breland, who was the Fever’s top player in both games agains the Mystics, had 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two blocks in defeat.
Atlanta Dream (2-2) over Chicago Sky (2-2), 90-83
The Dream maintained at least a seven-point lead throughout the fourth and were led by 26 points from Tiffany Hayes. Courtney Williams added 18 points and she and Hayes combined to go 6-of-9 from distance.
This was the Dream’s second win in a row and the Sky’s second loss in a row.
Kahleah Copper led Chicago with 21 points while Diamond DeShields had 17 points and nine rebounds.
